World's AgentKit + x402 Protocol Just Launched—Are AI Agents About to Become Crypto's Biggest Users?

Sam Altman’s World just dropped AgentKit, and I’m genuinely excited about this one. Not “blockchain will change everything” hype—actual product-market fit that solves real problems.

What Just Happened

World (Altman’s identity project) launched AgentKit with integration into Coinbase and Cloudflare’s x402 protocol. Here’s why this matters:

The Problem: AI agents are everywhere now—80% of Fortune 500 companies are running them. But there’s a critical issue: how do you know there’s a real person behind an autonomous agent making purchases, executing trades, or accessing services? A single bad actor could spin up thousands of agents.

The Solution: AgentKit uses World ID (biometric verification via those controversial Orbs) combined with zero-knowledge proofs. Each AI agent carries cryptographic proof it’s backed by a unique human—without revealing who that human is.

The Payment Layer: Integrated with x402 protocol for stablecoin micropayments. AI agents can now autonomously pay for APIs, services, compute—whatever they need—directly through HTTP requests. No human intervention required.

Why I Think This Is Big

I’ve been building in Web3 since 2017, been through multiple hype cycles. This feels different:

  1. Real demand: Fortune 500s are already giving their AI agents wallets. x402 processed 100M+ payments in its first 6 months.

  2. Actual use case: Not speculation—these are autonomous software agents that need to transact 24/7 without human approval for each micropayment.

  3. Market size: Projections show AI agent economy could hit $3-5 trillion by 2030. If even 10% of that flows through crypto rails, we’re talking about the biggest use case blockchain has ever had.

  4. Timing convergence: Tempo (backed by Stripe and Paradigm) just launched their Machine Payments Protocol on mainnet. Multiple serious players are betting on this.

My Questions for This Community

From a business perspective, I’m trying to figure out:

  • Volume vs Value: Will AI agents generate more transaction volume than humans but lower average value? Does that change how we build infrastructure?

  • Who captures value: Is this an infrastructure play (RPC providers, payment processors) or application layer opportunity (agent marketplaces, specialized services)?

  • Sustainability: Can these payment models sustain themselves or do they depend on VC subsidies like most Web3 has?

As a founder in this space, I’m seriously considering pivoting our product to serve AI agents instead of human users. The demand is real, the tech is shipping, and the incumbents (Stripe, Coinbase, OpenAI) are all in.

Are we finally seeing blockchain’s killer app emerge? Or am I drinking too much of the Kool-Aid?

Would love to hear what the technical folks here think about the architecture and what the DeFi community sees in terms of protocol opportunities.
